Paralogous genes typically occur in a single species but are also visible when species are compared. For example, human hemoglobin alpha is paralogus to human hemoglobin beta. human hemoglobin alpha is also paralogous to horse hemoglobin beta, but is orthologous to horse hemoglobin alpha
