Feedback on Week 1 Assignment

I am posting the feedback on your Week 1 assignment here.

• Thank you for submitting your assignment on time.
• All of the items listed in the assignment were completed except for the following items noted below. You have the opportunity to make up the points you lost on your assignment by making the requested changes by the Week 3 assignment deadline.
  • Your snail mail address needs either punctuation (commas) or to be separated onto separate lines. To get the wiki to put text on a new line, you actually have to skip an entire line.
  • When describing your independent research, say the dates like you would for your work experience. Also, it is customary to say "to present" instead of "current".
  • You wrote something in the summary field 127 out of 186 times (68%). The number of saves tells me that you are saving incrementally, early, and often, which is great. However we are aiming to write something in the summary field 100% of the time, so you have some room to improve on that.
  • Please remove the category "Shared" from your user page; that is only for the shared journal page.
  • As noted in class, you didn't need an additional Week 1 individual journal page.
  • You formatted your external link with a leading space and I was unsure whether that was intentional.
  • In your Acknowledgments section, please use the exact wording of the Academic Honesty statement and be sure to include your wiki signature.
• Your Excel knowledge is going to come in handy in this class!

Feedback on Week 5 Database Page

I am posting feedback on your Week 5 Database page here.

• Thank you for submitting your assignment on time.
• You completed all of the requested items except for the following:
  • When creating a link to download a file, please use the syntax [[Media:filename | visible label]] instead of [[File:filename | visible label]]. The latter does not create a direct download link, but takes you to a secondary page.
  • When we ask whether the database content is covered already, that means whether other databases have the same content, not whether this database has been cited by other papers?
  • I'm not sure what you meant about differences in downloading the data between public and private computers.
  • You need to provide in text citations in the form of hyperlinks to the database page from which you got the information for every question.
  • You also needed to cite the assignment page and journal article in your list of references. Your citation to the database needs the year in parentheses to be the correct APA format.
• As we move forward in the class, we will begin to talk more about "Quality Assurance" and "Data Curation and Re-use". In fact, the Week 7 assignment is predicated on the re-use of data from my lab that has been deposited in a public database.

Week 1 Redux Feedback

This is feedback on the corrections you made to the Week 1 assignment. All the requested changes were made except for the following:

• Your e-mail address is still appearing, unobscured.
• The phrase "Snail mail:" is now out of place in your address.
• The requested changes to the Reference section were not completed.
• In the period of September 12 to 19, you made 78 changes to the wiki and wrote something in the Summary field 77 times--keep up the good work!

Week 8 Interim Feedback

• I have checked your workbook submitted for the Week 8 interim deadline. It seems that all three of the members of your group had similar issues with the calculations. Corrections will need to be made before you are ready to continue on with the next stage of the protocol.
• Your calculations for cells V2, W2, X2, Y2, and Z2 are missing and instead seem to be in row three, causing your calculations to have an "off by one" error. This can be easily fixed by typing the correct formulas in row 2 and then filling the column from there. Calculations in the rows to the right will then automatically apply the new value.
• Cell Z3 (which should have been Z2) of the "dHAP4_ANOVA" sheet had the value of "0" instead of the formula that computes the average. Please go back and put in the correct formula. This will result in errors in some of the rest of the calculations because the data are missing, but it is not correct to put in a 0 if there is missing data or an error.
• Columns AB-->AF also have an error in the formula, referring to the wrong row. For example, =SUMSQ(D2:G2)-COUNTA(D2:G2)*V3^2 should read =SUMSQ(D2:G2)-COUNTA(D2:G2)*V2^2
• It appears that you computed the Bonferroni correction incomplete data because you did not undo the filter before doing those calculations. You will need to repeat those on the unfiltered data before you can move on.
• You will need to re-do the Benjamini and Hochberg corrections to the p value once you make the previous corrections. At the end of that procedure, don't forget to re-sort and copy back to the main ANOVA sheet.
• When linking to a file on your wiki page, please use the syntax of [[Media:filename | visible label]] instead of [[File:filename | visible label]]. The former syntax provides a direct link to download instead of taking you to an intermediate page.
• Also, you don't need "Copy of" in the filename for your file. Although this is automatically done by Windows when copying a file, it is a best practice to immediately change the filename to something you want.
