This assignment consisted of the LinkedIn learning course on Microsoft Access. The course contained 3 main chapters, the first chapter covered basic information about Microsoft access, including what it can do that other softwares cannot, some introductory terms for databases (queries, forms, tables), the advantages of using it over using Microsoft Excel. Chapter 2 was a tutorial on how to build a database in Microsoft access using one of the template files included in the training course. The database created in chapter 2 is about a hotel and it included information about room names, room information, and guests. It included a tutorial on creating a table, importing a table from excel, forming relationships, editing in design views and more. Chapter 3 was focused on retrieving information from the database in the form of queries.

This assignment was successful in showing me how to navigate Microsoft access, I learned a lot about creating these databases as well as how to edit the information in them and represent them in different ways, as well as how to make queries in the databases. The database used in this tutorial did not have anything to do with biology, but I am confident that this will be helpful in creating databases that do relate to biology and genes throughout the rest of the semester.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment was to become familiar and comfortable with the software Microsoft access. Microsoft access will lay a foundation for many of the future assignments done in this class because it is very useful with creating databases and managing files.

Methods and Results

It covered how to create a form in access in which it will report certain information that interacts with other information. This required entering syntax that subtracted some values from each other or multiplied others with others to determine values such as the total time stayed in the hotel, or the total amount spent by the guest.

Conclusion

This assignment was successful in showing me how to navigate Microsoft access, I learned a lot about creating these databases as well as how to edit the information in them and represent them in different ways, as well as how to make queries in the databases. The database used in this tutorial did not have anything to do with biology, but I am confident that this will be helpful in creating databases that do relate to biology and genes throughout the rest of the semester.

Acknowledgements

My Homework Partner for this week was Andrew Sandler, although we did not meet or text outside of class for the assignment. I did consult Dr. Dahlquist during class once when I was attempting to save my files to box and I was having trouble. Except for what is noted above, this individual journal entry was completed by me and not copied from another source. Msymond1 (talk) 11:28, 21 February 2024 (PST)
