Purpose

  • understand how to use the Microsoft Access software
  • use data from the FDA to find how data analysis is conducted using Microsoft Access
  • gain experience with database queries using Microsoft Access

Methods

  1. Download and decompress the files.
  2. Import the data files into a Microsoft Access database that is to be created.
  • Click on the "External Data" ribbon, and in the "Import & Link category, click on "Text File"
  • Browse the file that will be imported to the Access database
  • Once file is chosen, click "Ok"
  • For the first portion, default setting are fine, so click "Next". In the next portion, check the box stating "First Row Contains Field Names" since the FDA data files already contain the names. Click "Next"
  • Default settings are ok for the next page. Click "Next"
  • For the next page, if the data file already contains an unique ID for each row, then select "Choose my own primary key", if not, leave as is, and click "Next".
  • Click on "Finish" to end the Import Text Wizard, and close the pop up window that follows.
3. Set the relationships between your tables to match the schema provided by the FDA.
  • Under the "Tables" ribbon, click on "Relationships"
  • A pop-up window will appear, and there, the Tables that will be compared are chosen.
  • Once the tables have been chosen, there will be lines connecting certain data information which means that the data is the same for that section of the table.

Results

Zipped Microsoft Access FDA file can be found in the User:Dramir36 page, under "Data and Files"

Acknowledgments

  • I worked with my homework partner User:Cdomin12 in class. We did not meet outside of class for the reason that we were able to complete our own individual journals outside of class.
  • Except for what is noted above, this individual journal entry was completed by me and not copied from another source.
